(Colorado Springs, CO) – Victor Marx, candidate for Governor of Colorado, is strongly urging current Governor Jared Polis to grant clemency and immediately commute the sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters.
Marx issued the following statement earlier today:
Governor Polis,
As a leading candidate for Colorado governor, I am again urging you to grant clemency and commute the sentence of Tina Peters. Months ago, I said this was the most just and expedient course of action available to you. I stand by that today.
Tina Peters is a Gold Star mother and a grandmother. The sentence handed down in her case has deeply divided our state and, in the eyes of many Coloradans, represents a punishment that far exceeds the offense. Whether one agrees with her actions or not, justice must be measured, not excessive. It must restore trust — not erode it.
Governor Polis, we both recognize that Colorado must not have a two-tier system of justice. It is unacceptable that Tina Peters faces prison for nonviolent felonies while former State Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis, convicted on four felony charges, receives only probation and community service.
Justice must be equitable and consistent, ensuring all Coloradans are treated fairly under the law.
You have the constitutional authority to act. You have the opportunity to demonstrate that leadership is not about partisanship, but about fairness.
Do not allow this case to become a defining shadow over your administration. Instead, let it be remembered as the moment you chose reason over rigidity and unity over division.
Grant clemency. Commute her sentence. Do what is right because it is right.
And if you choose not to, on my first day in office, I will.
Colorado deserves justice tempered with wisdom.
Victor Marx emphasizes that the time for decisive action is now, and if Governor Polis will not act, he will release Tina Peters on day one after taking office as Colorado’s next governor.
